2nd Grade Math Skills Checklist: What a 2nd Grader Should Know

From place value to telling time, here is what a second grader should be able to do by spring, with a two-minute kitchen-table check for every skill.

By the last day of second grade, a child is expected to read a number like 743 and explain what each digit is worth. That one skill is a good test of the whole year. Most 2nd grade math skills aren't new topics so much as a solid floor under everything that comes later. Place value, fast and flexible addition and subtraction, time, money, and measurement all get locked in this year.

This guide walks through what a 2nd grader should know in math, domain by domain. For each skill you'll see what mastery looks like, a two-minute check you can run at the kitchen table, and a sign that your child may need more practice. Then we'll cover how to help at home without turning dinner into a drill session.

Why 2nd Grade Math Skills Matter More Than They Look

What should a 2nd grader know in math by the end of the year? Less than you might expect, at least on paper. There's no multiplication table to memorize and no long division, and the Common Core Grade 2 math introduction names only four critical areas. They are base-ten understanding, addition and subtraction fluency, standard units of measure, and reasoning about shapes.

Those four areas carry a lot of weight. Third grade multiplication is built on the equal groups and skip counting a child practices in second grade. Fractions depend on the halves, thirds, and fourths first drawn inside circles and rectangles this year. Multi-digit subtraction with regrouping only makes sense to a child who understands that a hundred is ten tens.

With my middle daughter, the gap showed up in third grade, not second. She could add 48 and 36 on paper, but she was counting on her fingers to do it. Once problems moved into the hundreds, the finger counting fell apart and we had to go back and rebuild. That experience is why I now check the skills below in the spring of second grade rather than waiting for a struggle to appear.

2nd Grade Math Checklist: Place Value, Facts, and Operations

The 2nd grade math skills below follow the order most curricula use, including the ArgoPrep workbooks we use at home. For each one, run the two-minute check at a calm moment, not right after a frustrating lesson. A relaxed kid shows you what they actually know.

Place Value to 1,000

What mastery looks like: Your child can read, write, and say numbers up to 1,000 in digits, words, and expanded form (300 + 40 + 7). They know that 10 ones make a ten, 10 tens make a hundred, and 10 hundreds make a thousand. They can compare two three-digit numbers using greater than, less than, and equal signs.

Two-minute check: Write 528 on a scrap of paper. Ask what the 5 is worth, then what the 2 is worth. Then ask for the number that is 10 more, 100 more, and 100 less. A child with solid place value answers 538, 628, and 428 without counting.

Sign of struggle: They say the 5 is "five" instead of "five hundred," or they need to count up by ones to find 10 more. Both point to a child who sees digits as separate symbols rather than bundles of value.

Addition and Subtraction Within 100 (and Strategies to 1,000)

What mastery looks like: Your child knows all sums within 20 from memory (7 + 8, 9 + 6). They use those facts to add and subtract within 100 quickly, on paper or in their head. For numbers up to 1,000, they can use place value strategies, like breaking 356 + 240 into hundreds, tens, and ones. They can also solve one- and two-step word problems and explain which operation they picked.

Two-minute check: Ask for 9 plus 7 and watch for a pause of more than three seconds. Then write 64 minus 28 and ask them to solve it any way they like. A fluent second grader may count up from 28 to 64, take away 30 and add 2 back, or regroup on paper. Any of those is fine, as long as it's quick and they can tell you what they did.

Sign of struggle: Finger counting for facts within 20, or only being able to solve 64 minus 28 with the standard algorithm and no idea why it works. NCTM's position statement on procedural fluency makes the point that fluency means efficient, flexible, and accurate, not just fast. A child with one method and no backup isn't fluent yet.

Skip Counting, Odd and Even, and Early Arrays

What mastery looks like: Your child can skip count by 5s, 10s, and 100s starting from any number, not just zero (35, 40, 45, and also 240, 340, 440). They can tell whether a group of up to 20 objects is odd or even by pairing them up. They can look at a rectangular array, say 3 rows of 4, and write it as 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.

Two-minute check: Ask them to count by 10s starting at 67. Then pour out a handful of dry beans and ask if the pile is odd or even. Finish by arranging 12 beans in rows of 3 and asking for an addition sentence that matches. This last one is the seed of multiplication, and it's worth watching closely.

Sign of struggle: Counting by 10s only works from zero, or the child counts the beans one at a time instead of seeing rows. Both are normal in the fall and a concern by late spring.

2nd Grade Math Checklist: Time, Money, Measurement, and Shapes

The second half of the 2nd grade math checklist covers the skills kids use outside a workbook: clocks, coins, rulers, and shapes. These are also the ones parents can check most naturally during a normal day.

Telling Time and Counting Money

What mastery looks like: Your child reads an analog clock to the nearest five minutes and knows the difference between a.m. and p.m. With coins, they can count a mixed handful of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies and say the total in cents. They can also solve a simple word problem, such as finding the total of 2 quarters and 3 dimes.

Two-minute check: Point at a real clock (not a phone) at 3:35 or 7:20 and ask for the time. Then drop 2 quarters, 3 dimes, 1 nickel, and 4 pennies on the table and ask for the total. A child who has this down groups the coins by value and counts 25, 50, 60, 70, 80, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89.

Sign of struggle: Reading the minute hand as the hour, or counting every coin as one. Money is a place value skill in disguise, so trouble here often shows up alongside trouble with tens and ones.

Measuring Length in Standard Units

What mastery looks like: Your child measures an object with a ruler in inches or centimeters, starting from zero and reading the mark closest to the end. They can estimate a length before measuring it (about 6 inches for a pencil) and pick a sensible unit. They understand that measuring the same shelf in centimeters gives a bigger number than measuring it in inches, because centimeters are smaller.

Two-minute check: Hand over a ruler and a book. Ask for an estimate first, then a measurement in inches, then the same measurement in centimeters. Finish by asking how much longer the book is than a crayon.

Sign of struggle: Starting the measurement at the end of the ruler instead of the zero mark, or guessing wildly on the estimate (a pencil is "50 inches"). Estimating is a number sense skill, and a wild guess tells you the units haven't become real to them yet.

Shapes, Equal Shares, and Simple Graphs

What mastery looks like: Your child can name and draw triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes based on the number of sides or faces. They can split a circle or rectangle into halves, thirds, and fourths and describe one piece as "a third of the whole." They can read a bar graph or picture graph with up to four categories and answer simple comparison questions from it.

Two-minute check: Draw a rectangle and ask your child to divide it into fourths two different ways. Then ask them to sort the family's shoes by color and sketch a quick bar graph of the result. The question to ask afterward is which color has the most and how many more than the least.

Sign of struggle: Cutting the rectangle into four pieces that aren't equal, or reading a bar graph by counting the bars instead of their heights. Unequal "fourths" are worth fixing now, because third grade fractions assume equal parts from day one.

How to Help Your Second Grader at Home

The good news about 2nd grade math skills is that they respond well to short, steady practice. In our house, second grade math gets 10 to 15 minutes a day of focused work, which beats a 90-minute Saturday session every time. Kids this age can hold attention for about that long, and daily repetition is what turns a strategy into a fact they simply know.

Go Concrete Before Abstract

Every skill on this list should be touched with real objects before it's written with symbols. Base-ten blocks (or bundled straws and loose straws) make regrouping visible. Coins teach place value better than any worksheet. A ruler in hand teaches units better than a picture of a ruler.

This isn't just a homeschool preference. The What Works Clearinghouse practice guide on elementary math intervention recommends a small, consistent set of concrete and visual representations, plus regular use of the number line. A number line taped to the table edge is one of the cheapest math tools you can own.

Use Math Talk, Not Just Math Drills

Ask your child to explain how they got an answer, even when it's right. "Tell me how you know" is my favorite sentence in our school day. Explaining forces a child to organize their thinking, and it shows you whether they used a strategy or just guessed. The same practice guide lists clear mathematical language as one of its core recommendations for a reason.

Math talk also fits into ordinary life. Count the change at the store out loud, or ask which pot holds more water and how you could check. Set the timer for 15 minutes and ask what time it will be when it rings. None of this feels like school, and all of it is second grade math.

When to Worry (and When Not To)

Some wobbles are normal. Reversing digits when writing 21 and 12, forgetting a.m. versus p.m., and needing fingers for 8 + 5 in October are all common. The signs that deserve attention are different. Watch for finger counting on basic facts in April, no subtraction strategy beyond counting by ones, and confusion about what the tens digit means.

If you see those, go back a level rather than pushing forward. A few weeks of rebuilding there usually fixes what months of grade-level drilling can't.

Your End-of-Year 2nd Grade Math Skills Checklist

Print this section or copy it into your planner. Check each item off when your child can do it quickly, on a calm day, without hints. Two or three unchecked boxes in May are a plan for summer, not a crisis.

  • Reads, writes, and compares numbers to 1,000, and can say what each digit is worth.
  • Knows addition and subtraction facts within 20 from memory, with no finger counting.
  • Adds and subtracts within 100 using at least two different strategies and can explain them.
  • Adds and subtracts within 1,000 using place value, including regrouping across tens and hundreds.
  • Solves one- and two-step word problems and chooses the right operation on their own.
  • Skip counts by 5s, 10s, and 100s from any starting number, and sorts numbers as odd or even.
  • Writes an addition sentence for a rectangular array, such as 3 rows of 5 as 5 + 5 + 5.
  • Tells time to the nearest five minutes on an analog clock and uses a.m. and p.m. correctly.
  • Counts a mixed set of coins and solves simple money word problems.
  • Measures length in inches and centimeters, estimates before measuring, and compares two lengths.
  • Names shapes by their sides and faces, and splits circles and rectangles into equal halves, thirds, and fourths.
  • Reads a bar graph or picture graph and answers questions about it.

If most of these are checked by late spring, your child is ready for third grade. If several aren't, the domain sections above tell you exactly where to spend your 10 to 15 minutes a day.
